Busy road closed as flooding hits East Kilbride
A busy road in East Kilbride has been closed after flooding from burst water main left it impassable.
The A741 was shut at the height of rush hour yesterday morning after several vehicles were hit by floodwater, which also caused damage to underground pipes.
A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council told the Evening Times: “We had a burst pipe in North Street on Monday evening which affected the road surface and led to flooding further along the A741.”
E-Kilbride man jailed for dealing cocaine
An E-Kilbride man has been jailed for dealing cocaine worth £2,500.
John Taylor had been previously handed a two-year and eight-month sentence in 2011 after being caught with drugs by police.
He was arrested again on Tuesday, this time at his home in Newmains Road, where officers found two large bags of cocaine hidden under his bed and car seat. The 53-year-old pled guilty to possession of class A drugs before East Kilbride Sheriff Court today (Friday).
No jail for East Kilbride man caught with porn stash
A man who was caught with a stash of indecent images of children has escaped jail.
Thomas Fortune, 34, of Kilbirnie Crescent in East Kilbride, had more than 200 images on his computer and phone when they were discovered by police in June last year. He pled guilty to possessing the images at Airdrie Sheriff Court earlier this week and was given a community payback order.
Busy East Kilbride road closed due to flooding
- The road is closed from its junction with Muirhead Avenue to Boghall Crescent.
- The closure started at 7 pm on Friday and it is expected that it will remain in place until at least early Saturday morning.
- The closure was put in place because of an underground pipe bursting, which caused flooding on the roadway and pavement. In addition to this, several other streets in East Kilbride were forced to close due to waterlogging caused by heavy rain during Thursday night and Friday morning’s rush hour period. These include Cairnhill Road; Viewpark Street; North Glenmore Street; Westwood Drive; Auldhouse Road; South Glenmore Street; Muirhead Avenue and Boghall Crescent (for both directions).
Christmas Day bin collections in South Lanarkshire
Council bin collections will be made as usual on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Bin collections will be made as usual on December 25, with no change to the weekly routine.
This includes garden waste bins, which should have been set out by 6 pm on 22 December; or any time between 7 am and 7 pm from 23-26 December.
Pedestrian struck in crash on busy EK street
A pedestrian was injured when they were hit by a car as they tried to cross a busy road in East Kilbride early this morning.
The accident happened at around 2:50 am on Friday, November 8th, on A725 Glasgow Road near the junction with Mossend Road. The pedestrian – who was not wearing any reflective clothing – had been crossing the road when he was struck by a blue Renault Megane driven by an 18-year-old woman from Shotts. The driver stopped at the scene and police subsequently attended along with paramedics from the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS).
The male victim sustained injuries that were described as ‘serious’. He was taken to Hairmyres Hospital for treatment where he remains in hospital at the time of writing.
Police said that inquiries into what happened are ongoing but confirmed that nobody else was involved in this incident and that no one else suffered any injuries as a result of it.
Met Office forecast snowy showers and icy chill until Friday
Snow is expected to fall throughout the day today. Temperatures will be below freezing and winds are likely to be strong, so ice on roads and pavements may lead to difficult driving conditions.
People should take care when walking on icy paths, particularly near ponds where there is still a risk of thin ice.
The Met Office also warns people that if you do drive during this period then you should be extra vigilant for other vehicles.

Traffic cops hunt BMW after hit and run.
Traffic cops are hunting a BMW involved in a hit and run on Wednesday.
The black BMW was spotted at around 2:30 pm heading towards the town center by traffic cops.
The driver of the vehicle is described as a white male, aged between 25-35 years old, wearing a black baseball cap and a black hoodie with writing on it.
Cyclist seriously injured in Rutherglen smash.
A COUPLE has been left devastated after their husband and father were seriously injured in a road accident in Rutherglen.
The cyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a car at around 8 am on Monday, March 18.
He has since been transferred to Forth Valley Royal Hospital where he remains in stable condition.
A woman who lives nearby told the News that she had heard the sound of sirens after the crash and went outside to witness first responders working on the patient at the roadside.
